- It is the year 490AD. It
has been nearly 90 years since the last of the Roman Legions
withdrew from Britain. For almost 50 years Britain's shores were
free from invaders. Meanwhile in Northern Europe the native tribes
heard tell of a rich and fertile land over the sea.
In 448 King Vortigern under increasing pressure from foreign
raids asked the Angles under Hengist and Horsa to help defend
Britain's shores. However in 455 Hengist and Horsa turned against
King Vortigern at Aylesford in Kent where Horsa was slain. The
following year Hengist attacked again with his son Aesc at the
battle of Crayford also in Kent where the Britons were defeated
heavily. This event sparked the real beginning of the Anglo-Saxon
colonisation of Britain.
